Mingle Bells 2013 Was A Blast!

Man oh man! This year has just flown by! It’s crazy to think we’re a couple of weeks away from Christmas and just around the corner from the new year! HOLY CRAP!

This was the first year that I attended the San Diego Mingle Bells event, put up by the San Diego Ad Club. I heard last year was a lot of fun, and with Incubate as a major sponsor (those guys are practically family), I just had to make this happen!!! And I’m glad I did!

Mingle Bells wasn’t like your standard networking event, first of all, it was held at  the Fluxx nightclub in downtown San Diego! With some awesome food apps from places like The Kebab Shop and other tasty treats and a full bar to please your heart’s desire, what’s not to like about this event?

Throughout the night, as the level of alcohol in your bloodstream rises, your business mingling goes from professional to pure debauchery! hahahaha! What’s not to like about that?

I didn’t take any good photos, but Bill Wechter (a local news photographer) was kind enough to email me a pic he got of me along with Edwin (CEO and Co-Founder of Cofa Media) and Mike (Director of Performance Optimization at Mindgruve).

All in all Mingle Bells 2013 was a success! I met some awesome new people, rekindled old connections and got to hang out with a solid crew of guys and gals I have the pleasure to work with and/or hang out with more frequently.

Did we meet there? Drop me a line! :)

Example of Social Media and SEO Working Together

I wrote this email today and thought it would be fun to share. Let me know what you guys think, don’t be afraid of the the comment box, it won’t bite you! ;)

The way to approach Social Media in a multi-faceted campaign can be divided into different categories, of which, here are the main ones the come to mind:

  • Social Media as a way to leverage our SEO efforts
  • Social Media in connection with Paid & Display
  • Social Media with focus on branding (true Social Media)
  • …and all of the above :)

SEO and Social MediaAs far as how Social Media and SEO integrate with one another, there are many examples of how efforts to engage your social sphere can produce SEO friendly side effects.

A good example of this is putting all of the Social Media presence through a thorough audit to make sure all of the information is consistent with the brand, and that any glaring opportunities to connect those properties with the main website are being taken. Once that has been taken care of, a popular way of leveraging Social Media efforts for SEO is through the creation of what we refer to as “Link Bait” content.

Even though the term “Link Bait” sounds a little fishy, there’s really nothing fishy about it. All it means is the development of some type of media (infographic, video, images, content, etc) that communicates a message that is engaging and that your social following will be compelled to share.

Here’s an example of such content from one a cool company. SalesBrain.com is a company that specializes in Neuromarketing, and recently, they pushed an infographic on their blog about how the human brain interacts with video games. The good, the bad, and the ugly… See the blog post and infographic here:  http://www.neurosciencemarketing.com/blog/articles/video-games-infographic.htm

This is an example of “Link Bait” content. It’s good, interesting, engaging, well built, and fun to share. When people share this type of media, they naturally create backlinks that point back to the source of that content, which in this case, it’s their blog. They not only capitalize on some true Social Media results, but revitalize the SEO efforts with some natural link building, the way it was meant to happen in the first place.

Your Attitude Can Affect SEO

“…I’m so tired…”

“…c’mon!!!! What? Why?…”

These are some of the possible things you may hear from a person who’s escalating in the frustration scale. Now, this unmotivated, lazy and grumbling attitude is something that most of us are very familiar with. Some of us have realized that this negative attitude can affect our lives in, well, negative ways. Imagine That!

If you just had an “Ah-Ha!” moment after reading that, then I hope you’re open to change because knowing you have a negative attitude and not changing makes for a very frustrated life.

Back to the subject at hand, in the same way negative attitude can impact your life in negative ways, it can also impact your SEO, and all internet marketing efforts.

You probably see where I’m going with this, but really, it can, and it will. Fortunately this is an issue that we are in control of, since this is part of our own algorithm. This is a variable we can change with a few tweaks and some good optimization.

Realization is the First Step

We don’t know what we don’t know. Having said that, we have a deep innate ability to find out things about ourselves through some introspection. Look at your work and your habits while working, and ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I feel there’s a lack of spontaneity in my professional life?
  • Do I feel bored and robotic doing this stuff?
  • Do I ignore small signs of progress?
  • Am I avoiding the community?
  • Do I avoid learning and doing more SEO?

Be honest with this stuff. If you answered “Yes” to any of those questions, than your SEO skills may be compromised. Pretty basic stuff you ask? Yes, but if that’s happening for you, then you’re probably not achieving your potential for success every day, and that’s probably translating into poor, or less than great, quality work from you.

Yes You Can

Do I have your attention now? Good. Then you probably need to read this post. :)

After realizing this is happening to you, comes decision time. That means, you need to decide if this is what you really want to be doing, and promise yourself you’ll be really good at whatever it is you decide on.

Now that you decided to stay in internet marketing (you did, didn’t you?), fulfill your promise to be really good at it! Start by making a conscious effort to have a positive attitude. Force a smile here and there, fake it till you make it!

I Can See Clearly Now, The Rain Is Gone

Servant Leader

Now that the clouds of negativity have been lifted, look around you and surround yourself with the right tools, people and environment that stimulate your mind in positive ways.

Be a servant leader, and an eternal learner. Look for the opportunity in every circumstance, and think of how you will step up in surprising, positive ways. Connect with good people and do for others as you want done unto you.

In the work place, don’t rush your tasks. Take time to get the job done right, and done once. Once you stop the negative chatter in your brain, your ears and eyes can hear and see things they could never hear and see before. You will notice little variables that provoke tremendous results, and you will not only be really good at what you do, but you will also love what you do!
